Butlins, Fun & Dancing
We couldn't wait to start our fun filled holiday at Butlins. A highlight of our trip was meeting Billy Bear who stopped to have his photo taken with us. The Redcoats, as always made us feel very welcome and always loved listening to what we had been up to.
We spent a brilliant morning at Skegness Aquarium. Our adventure began with an introduction from the Captain Long John Silver before we uncovered the depths of the aquarium, learning as we went about the world of marine life including sharks, octopus and venomous, fishy predators. Long John Silver’s storeroom was only for the brave as we came face to face with huge tarantulas, scorpions and rats. In the sunken hold we could get up close to clown fish, sharks and octopus which then lead to the Aqua Theatre where we saw the amazing stingrays and the zebra sharks before enjoying the wonderful experience of the sea caves where sea life swam over our heads.
The live, evening entertainment was always a hit with our group. 'Turn Back Time' featured tribute hits to ABBA and Cher and was one of our favourite performances. We had many ABBA fans in our group so instantly we were on the dance floor clapping, cheering and having a great time. Their outfits were so colourful and sparkly. The show really was superb.
We stepped back in time to an era when dinosaurs roamed the earth as we entered Jurassic Falls in Dinosaurland. There were dinosaurs at every twist and turn along the winding trail, hiding in bushes and grazing in the treetops making for great photos. Some roared and hissed and the 14 metre T-Rex was spectacular.
Off to the fun fair for a few thrills. We jumped on a horse and whirled around on the carousel, whizzed on the waltzers and took a ride on the Mexican hat. It was great fun and once we had stopped feeling dizzy, we tried our luck by playing ‘hook a duck’ winning some fantastic prizes.
Tenpin bowling was another great activity and we split into two teas, boys v girls. The competition was tough with plenty of strikes and high scores. The boys narrowly won, but the girls were great sports and gave them a huge round of applause.
Wow, a fascinating morning was spent at Church Farm Village Museum, a hidden gem and Lincolnshire’s only open air museum set in acres of gardens and orchards just a short distance from Skegness. We wandered around the grounds perusing the historic farm machinery, exploring the original 1720s farmhouse which is furnished to the period 1900-1910 with tin baths and a wash house. Then we stepped back in time in the unique war room where we could try on steel helmets and pose with a gun. The volunteers were great and so enthusiastic and loved to show and tell us all about the history and memorabilia.
