Alton Towers Theme Park with Netty & Oli

 Alton Towers Theme Park

Two fantastic days were spent at the awesome theme park, Alton Towers. After studying the map we headed straight to The Smiler which is one of the biggest rides in the park and is a record breaking roller coaster with 14 loops! The dare devils amongst took our seats and we twisted and turned round and around at great speeds. Next up was an old school classic Oblivion, which is one of the oldest rides in the park. Hanging over the edge at the top set our hearts racing as we then plunged into darkness deep into ‘oblivion’. It was awesome!

A little gentler ride was called for and we enjoyed the slow pace of cable car giving us beautiful views of the park and its pristinely kept gardens.

We couldn't resist one of the newest rides in the park, The Wicker Man. This ride first takes you into a darkened room where we were told the story of The Wicker Man. Only then, the chosen ones can climb on-board the Beornen’s works train passing further into their secretive world, splintering around a labyrinth of twisted track. The burning embers light the path as the train hurtles towards the six-storey high flaming effigy. Speeding towards the Wicker Man, he spectacularly ignites into flames as the train bursts through his chest three times. It was exhilarating!

Our next ride was Nemesis and Galacticatwo more big, fast roller coasters! We felt like we were flying. TH13TEEN took us on and adventure through the spooky woods, when suddenly we came to a halt in complete darkness. It was then the freefall vertical drop, that took us all by surprise and certainly got the adrenaline pumping around our body! We then braced ourselves as the lights went green on Rita as we were then powered straight to 100kmp in just 2.5 seconds. We came off that ride with our mouths almost on the ground! Wow! That was quick!

After that, we went to the David Williams area of the park and decided to go on the Gangster Granny ride, which was a hilarious adventure through the story itself. We also checked out the CBeebies area of the park to re-live some of our favourite childhood programes

We headed to the aquarium which held an incredible selection of sea life where we learnt lots of interesting facts about all the sea creatures. This really was a magical experience, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

Before leaving we had to go on the big water ride, The Congo River Rapids. We saved this until last because there was a big chance that we were going to get wet, which we did! It was really fun and everyone enjoyed being thrown from side to side on the raging waters.

On the agenda today was a trip to a local dairy farm where they make their own ice cream. We also got to meet the animals that live on the farm. The cows, goats and sheep were all enjoying the morning sunshine and loving the attention they were receiving from us.

Everybody tried lots of the different flavoured ice creams they had on offer, and it was simply delicious. We learnt the process about how it is made, here on the farm and how they come up with all the different flavour combinations.

We were so lucky with our accommodation being set right in the heart of the forest. We loved exploring
the beautiful woodland, being nature detectives.

The train enthusiast amongst us were thrilled as we drove up to Wirksworth train station just in time to catch the 14:55 Steam Service on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. We boarded the beautiful vintage steam train to ride the longest line in the whole of the Peak DistrictThe route took us through some beautiful countryside, and we enjoyed meeting the train guarddrivers and staff along the way.

Making the most of the warm evening sun, we lit the BBQ and all helped in cooking up a feast.

A memorable afternoon was spent at Abraham Heights in Matlock Bath. We took the cable car up to Abraham Heights, a beautiful hilltop area which was originally a lead mining site, in the late 1700's. As the mining industry became less economical, the miners became cavern guides, and a whole visitor attraction was built.

We took a tour through the mines and caves, learning all about their history. It was very dark and freezing cold, but we stuck together and really enjoyed the experience with our knowledgeable guide! We had another delicious, locally made ice cream and took in the fantastic views, basking in the sunshine. We visited The Fossil Factory, providing us with a fascinating insight into the formation of fossils and what would've once been found when Matlock Bath was submerged under water over 330 million years ago.

A great time was had on the nearby crazy golf course. It was a fun but challenging course, providing us with lots of laughs as we tried to get that lucky hole in one! It was a really close competition with some great skills!
