Farm Experience & Zoo
We headed to Colchester Zoo ready for our animal experience. The sun was shining for us making it a perfect day. We were all excited to see the different animals and they were just as excited to see us as too! Our first stop was at the Africa area and here we saw all the big greats including elephants, rhinos, giraffes and zebras. It was amazing to see them roaming around and so close to us.
There was animal antics when we stopped at the lemur enclosure as one of them climbed onto the keeper’s shoulder which was fun for us to watch. The sea lions put on a show as we managed to watch them being fed.
We then jumped on the zoo train and took a ride around the park. The grey wolves prowled around their enclosure, the cheeky monkeys and playful meerkats made us laugh. The tigers put on a show as we were lucky enough to see them being fed- gosh they were hungry! Then we managed to see the lazy lions laying in the glorious sunshine, soaking up the midday heat.
We were so lucky to be living by the sea and witnessed the most of the beautiful evening sunsets.
A wonderful afternoon was spent at Boydells Farm, a small, family run working farm. When we arrived, we were greeted by the farmer who proceeded to give us a most wonderful and interactive hands-on tour accompanied by some hilarious farm related jokes.
We were greeted by the cheeky kids. Luckily, we got to sit and have a cuddle with them, but they were soon back on their feet jumping around making us laugh.
The hands-on experience didn’t stop there! We brushed and stroked the Shetland ponies and took them for a walk around the yard.
Holding the baby chicks was the most wonderful experience and it was amazing to be able to bottle feed the hungry, week-old lambs. Then we petted donkeys, horses and alpacas. The farmer showed us the waddling ducks and the biggest turkey we’ve ever seen! Everyone was amazed as to how soft his feathers felt when we stroked him. The last thing we watched were the sheep being milked by Gary and Tammy. It was especially interesting to learn the process of how milk is turned into yogurt.
We made the most of our own Jacuzzi and spent the evenings in the warm bubbles!
A lovely morning was spent at Maldon estuary, famous for its salt and its collection of 200-year-old sailing ships that are moored here. We sat for a while and enjoyed a drink, and we couldn’t resist the seaside favourite- hot, sugary donuts. The lovely, fresh sea air was welcome as we walked along the promenade to the pop-up zoo. This was a fantastic place to visit! The staff were very friendly and welcoming. They showed us around, introducing us to new born lambs, meerkats and fluffy alpacas. A fearless group held a tarantula, touched a snake, stroked a vampire rat and a bearded dragon. It had been another memorable hands-on experience.
Then we drove to Clacton on Sea and took a stroll along the beach. A few of us were keen to have a paddle in the cool water. Another must, was a ride on the Big Wheel which gave us amazing views of the long, sandy coastline. It was then time to chance our luck on the arcade machines, winning some great seaside memorabilia. We had just enough time to pop into some of the gift shops to stock up on some last-minute presents.
