Yorkshire Dales, TV Soap Country
We were so excited to visit the village of Goathland, the home of the
hit TV soap, Heartbeat. Here we saw police cars that had been used in the
actual show. We
recognised lots of the buildings in the village from the program and it felt like
we were the actors in the show!
All aboard the old steam train on the Yorkshire Moors
for a return journey from Goathland to Pickering. We learnt that Goathland station was used in the
filming of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone! We watched the steam train
pull into the station and we climbed in and took our seats in the old carriages
relaxing with a drink. The old fashioned conductor came round and punched our
tickets and we even got to witness an engine change!
Our soap land tour continued as we made our way to Holmfirth, where The Last of the Summer Wine was filmed. On the way we saw some
beautiful views of the Yorkshire Dales, including free roaming sheep and their
new born lambs. We had lunch in Sid's
cafe where there was plenty of memorabilia for us to look at and of
course we bought some souvenirs!
We became landlord of the Woolpack Pub from the popular TV soap Emmerdale. We got the chance to pull the perfect pint and we all thought we did a pretty good job at it, too!
A great morning was spent at the Wensleydale cheese factory where we learnt about
where cheese originated from.We saw some really old cheese making equipment that we couldn’t believe was
actually used to make cheese! We watched a live demonstration and we even
had a go at shaking the whey to turn it into butter! In the factory we saw huge
amounts of cheese being made and luckily for us, we were able to sample some of it too.
As you can imagine we had a brilliant morning at The Black Sheep Brewery where we listened to a talk on
the history of the brewery. We got to taste
different grains which had different flavours which they use in their beers. We
went for a tour around the brewery and learnt how beer is brewed. At the end we
got to try lots of different beers including flavours such as lemon, mango and
raspberry.
What a wonderful afternoon at the farm getting to meet lots of different animals. The family of dogs and their
puppy’s were adorable. We
got to stroke cows and the baby chicks which were only a day old! We got to hold tortoises, guinea pigs,
a hedgehog, ferrets, a rat and a chinchilla. The rat liked sitting on our
shoulders so we made sure we sat so still! Lastly we bottle fed some cute little lambs who were so strong and they didn’t take long to drink all of their milk.
We were keen to visit Ripon Cathedral where we admired its
beautiful architecture and stained glass windows. We were lucky enough to watch
the choir practicing. We found the Cathedral very peaceful.
An afternoon at sea on a boat ride that resembled a pirate ship was a great way to end our holiday. It
was a replica of Captain Cook, the Yorkshire explorers ship. We learnt about
life at sea in those times and Captain Cooks voyages. Luckily none of us were
made to walk the plank! The views from the sea, looking back inland at the
Whitby coast line and Whitby Abbey on the hill were spectacular. On the way
back we sang along to the sailor music
Wherever possible we always managed to treat ourselves to a delicious ice cream! Well, we are on holiday!
