Italy- Sun & Sea with Lawrence, Claire & Rachel

Italy- Sun & Sea

Our hotel was incredible! There were two swimming pools, one being on the rooftop. We had fantastic views overlooking the beautiful blue sea and the stunning coastline.

Exploring the beautiful town of Chieti in the warm sunshine was a lovely way to spend the morning. Located in the heart of the city of Chieti stands the Cathedral of San Giustino, one of the most important religious buildings of Abruzzo.

Another glorious day spent relaxing by the pool and topping up our tans! Oh, it's a hard life!

Something that we hadn't seen before were old fishing huts on stilts called Trabocchi. We learnt how a large  net is lowered from the Trabocco down to the sea. The fishing net is left in the sea water for a certain time: half an hour or an hour. When the fisherman lifts up the net there he finds his catch!

There was plenty to see in the town of Vasto, visiting the churches, the Palazzo d'Avalos which is the town's most imposing building overlooking the sea and we wandered through its attractive Neapolitan-style garden. We sat in the town square which is right next to the very impressive Cathedral of San Giuseppe. The architecture was simply breath-taking. What a view.

The hustle and bustle of the market was a great way to make us feel like a local. We took our time wandering around, looking at all the fresh fruit and vegetables for sale and tried some yummy cured meat and local cheese.

We spent the morning topping up our tan as we lay on the sandy beach. We all went for a paddle in the turquoise sea, though it want quite warm enough for a swim. The sea was so clear, we could see shoals of fish swimming past!

The medieval village of Opi sat on a hill top, surrounded by the mountains of the National Park of Abruzzo. It is classified as one of the "most beautiful villages" in Italy, and we all agreed. Here we had spectacular views down onto lakes and valleys.

We sailed along the river, soaking up the sun and relaxing. As we got closer to the sea, the boat started to speed up which was great fun. The coastline looked stunning with the sun shining against it and the crystal clear waters looked never ending.

After our evening meals we always enjoyed the live entertainment. One of our favourite nights was at the karaoke bar where the atmosphere was buzzing. A few of us were brave enough to take to the microphone and sing our hearts out! We received a huge round of applause from the rest of the holiday makers. We then danced the night away to the fantastic disco hits.
