Wales- Castles, Coast & Steam Trains with Gary & Isobel

Wales- Castles, Coast & Steam Trains

A fabulous morning was spent at Ludlow Castle. Walking around the impressive grounds you see the ancient house of Kings, Queens, Princes and judges giving us a rare glimpse into the lifestyle of medieval societies. We managed to take some photos in the Round Chapel, dating back to the 12th century. This Norman architecture is one of the very few circular naves to survive in Britain.

Rhys climbed the many steps to the top of the tower and gave us all a big wave, towering above us.

Luckily the dragon that keeps guard of the castle was feeling rather friendly!

We experienced the Magic of Life Butterfly House set in the stunning Rheidol Valley. The group were delighted to be greeted by lots of free-flying tropical butterflies of all beautiful colours and shapes. We dipped our fingers in the sugar water and were thrilled when some landed on our hands; it was such an exciting experience.

Aberystwyth is one of the biggest towns in mid Wales with the seafront having the oldest pier which was built in 1864. We walked along the mile long Victorian promenade before our stomachs started to rumble. We couldn't visit the seaside without having delicious traditional fish and chips for lunch! We enjoyed a takeaway overlooking the coastline, watching other holiday makers enjoying themselves on the beach.

We browsed the open air market in the village square looking at all the local produce and arts and crafts on sale. Everyone bought some great gifts and souvenirs to take home.

Excitedly we made our way to the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway. We took our seats in the old train and soon found ourselves travelling through the beautiful countryside with its tight curves and steep gradients. The train winds its way all along the river Banwy into Llanfair. The carriages have been beautifully restored and at the end of each carriage is a small balcony which you could stand and take in the stunning views.  One of the staff at the station gave our group an activity book which was filled with puzzles, crosswords and colouring pages.

It was a glorious, sunny day to spend the day on our private charter boat The Dream Catcher. Once on board we headed along the spectacular Marine Heritage Coast to Cwmtydu to see the Caves, Birds Rock and Seals Bay. Stephen who is a keen bird watcher was quick to point out various species of some of the nesting birds most of which we had never heard of! We loved that he shared his outstanding knowledge about these birds with us. We also stopped at a spot well known for bottlenose dolphins.

We can't ever resist a tasty ice cream treat.....well we are on holiday!

We were so lucky to have our very own hot tub at our lodge. We relaxed in the warm, bubbling jacuzzi soaking up the late evening sunshine. Whilst some of us relaxed Gary and Rhys put on their chef’s and cooked an incredible BBQ feast fit for a King!
