Norfolk- Boats, Trains & Seaside
We donned our wet weather gear, strapped ourselves into our life jackets and headed down to climb aboard our canoes. We quickly got the hang of using the paddles effectively and were soon racing each other out to the open water! Being on the lake was amazing as it gave us a totally different perspective of our surroundings. Just the sound of the water gently lapping against the side of our canoes and the splashing of our paddles were the only sounds to be heard.
We headed up to North Norfolk to catch a steam train from the picturesque market town Holt to the seaside town of Sheringham in search of sun, sea, and most importantly ice cream! We had a lovely ride along the Norfolk coast and could see for miles out to sea and even spotted another windmill!
There were so many quaint little shops for us to pop in and out of buying some great souvenirs. We stopped to watch a live band play a variety of songs before coming across a great little local history museum. Inside, we discovered what it was like to work for the RNLI and saw some fantastic exhibits including several lifeboats dating back to the 1930's right up until the present day.
The fabulous Calvert Trust staff took us out on a fantastic motorboat ride through the very beautiful Norfolk Broads National Park! Along the way we were treated to some beautiful scenery and spotted some unusual buildings including some old windmills. We spotted some beautiful wildlife that you just wouldn't see ordinarily including great crested grebes, herons and even a tiny but none the less beautiful Kingfisher sitting on the water side looking for its next fishy meal.
We spent a fun afternoon in Norwich at the leisure complex and headed straight to the bowling alley. We had a brilliant, competitive few games, with Mel winning the first game with 83 points and Nick coming second and Helen and Leslie joint third.
What a wonderful experience we had aboard a magnificent sailboat. Our instructor carefully navigated the boat up the river and out onto the broads, then once we had found sufficient wind, we were able to work as a team to lower the sails, work the ropes and the rudder and sail back and forth across the broads having an absolute whale of a time!
Gift shopping is always a priority and after spending all of our holiday pennies we spent time along the river feeding and admiring the swans and other animals.
Wroxham Miniature Worlds is a model railway enthusiasts dream but also had lots more to offer. We had a great time checking out the huge displays some of which were interactive and had fun finding the answers to a series of questions on each display. We had fun playing on lots of old vintage slot machines using old fashioned pennies then had a go at flying planes and driving trains in the various simulation booths. We even had a go at playing some retro arcade games like space invaders and Pacman!
