Germany & The Moselle River
At the Moselle River we caught the ferry boat for a cruise down the river. We admired the picturesque vineyards and villages along the way. After a couple of hours we arrived at Bernkastel - Kues where we disembarked. We strolled around this beautiful town arriving in the famous mediaeval market square with its pretty gable timber-framed houses.
We visited the city of Trier, possibly the oldest town in Germany. It was amazing to see so many historical buildings like the famous Roman City Gate called Porta Nigra, St. Peter's cathedral which is the oldest church in Germany and the ancient Roman Basilica of Constantine.
We boarded a coach for a trip to Luxembourg. We had a
guided walking tour of the city which took us to many fascinating places but we especially enjoyed visiting the Notre Dame Cathedral with its
beautifully sculptured and colourful stained glass
windows. We then
made our way up to a viewing point where we could look down on the beautiful old city.
In Saarburg we took a steady climb up to the ruins of Saarburg castle. Once there we enjoyed a picnic whilst looking at the amazing views across the valley and the old town. Later that day we moved on to an animal park where we boarded a tractor drawn trailer that took us up through the woodland to a high clearing where we watched an amazing bird of prey display. After the show we had a steady walk through the woods where we saw pigs, goats, meerkats and rabbits.
After a lovely ferry journey on the Moselle we
went to look at the famous Weinschift, a reconstruction of a wooden Roman wine
boat. We then walked
around the town of Neumagen - Dhron spotting other historical artefacts and reading about their
history. After lunch we walked to a riverside hotel where some of us
sampled the local wine and beer.
Our evenings were spent watching great entertainment and of course a lot of dancing and singing under the stars!
At the resort we enjoyed playing games of boules and mini golf in the beautiful sunshine. We also had a fantastic swimming pool!
We all had a fabulous time in Germany and have great memories to take home!
