The Wonders of the Isle of Wight with Darren & Marguerite

The Wonders of the Isle of Wight

Our first trip was to the infamous Needles at Alum Bay, a tourist ‘hotspot’ where you can view the rocks and take in the breathtaking scenery. It didn’t disappoint and the views were spectacular from the wooden platform.

We watched the live demonstrations from the skilled local craftsmen at Alum Bay Glass Factory, creating beautiful, unique glassware from perfume bottles and vases to ornaments and animals. It was fascinating to see.

You can’t visit the Isle of Wight without visiting the seaside, so we travelled to Ryde and sat in the glorious sunshine whilst watching the hovercraft making journeys across the Solent to Portsmouth.

An ice cream treat was a must... we were on holiday after all!

A JollyDays day of fun was had  at the steam railway at Havenstreet. This is one of the islands most treasured attractions and a leader in UK heritage railways. We hopped on board the train and we were lucky to have the Edwardian carriage to ourselves. We shared a wonderful experience chugging through the stunning Isle of Wight countryside to Wootton where the engine changed ends and then journeyed to Smallbrook junction. Once again, the engine changed ends for our final journey back to Havenstreet. The station guards were friendly and shared a photo or two with us en route making it a memorable experience.

We were just in time to see the owls in action on the woodland stage. Haven Falconry hold daily displays and have 20 species of birds of prey from around the world. This was awesome, owls flying so close to us just barely missing our heads!

The live shows were something we looked forward to every night. We laughed, clapped and sang along to all the amazing shows. The entertainment was always top notch and we loved dancing the night away to the resident band, showing off our groovy moves.

A great morning was spent at the Military and Heritage Museum in Cowes. This museum is amazing and houses a huge collection of wartime memorabilia from uniforms and rifles to model tanks from across the globe. We had the chance to actually hold guns and don helmets, sit inside a tank and have our own guide parting with so much knowledge throughout our tour.

There are two main exhibition areas housing a variety of different vehicles covering six decades of military and civilian transport, from the earliest B-N islander aircraft G-AVCN to a WW2 police car.

We always find time to explore the beautiful gardens, enjoy a swing on the garden tree swing and visit the bird aviary.

We hit the tenpin bowling alley in Ryde. Everyone had been looking forward to this, wanting to show off their bowling skills. We had a fun time trying to out do each other and score the most points. Anna scored a huge 90 to take the winning position from team 2, whilst Lianne scored a massive 88 to win from team 1. Well done all, great job!
