Winter Sun in the Canaries - Lanzarote
The sun was shining and we couldn't wait to explore the hotel and were wowed that there
were 3 pools for us to make a splash in! Luckily for us the hotel was situated
right on the beach so without hesitation we walked down to the water’s edge and
had a paddle and made some great masterpieces out of the pebbles.
We took the ferry over to the Isla de Lobos via
Correlajo which is a National Park. We travelled out to sea and
along the coastline with the captain pointing out the sights but sadly, there
were no dolphins to be seen today. On the island we explored finding little
sandy coves and marvelling at the volcanic rock landscape which, we all agreed,
looked like something from a sci-fi film. We
had our packed lunches on the beach, catching the sunrays, and
learning about the flora and fauna of the island, including how the inhabitants
live here.
The sun loungers were calling and we loved soaking up the glorious sunshine. We couldn’t wait to jump in the
refreshing pool and practise our swimming. The warm jacuzzi and sauna were also
a hit with us all.
Another adventure took us to the Timafaya National Park. At the first stop we climbed a steep set of steps to observe the surrounding volcanic vista which is a feature of this area. Next, was The Green Lagoon at El Golfo, part of the National Park, where we saw amazing sculpted volcanic hills surrounding a bright green stretch of water; the green colour being produced by excessive plankton production. After that came a really exciting ride …. on camels! We mounted the panniers on our camels, and we trekked around the volcanic hillside swaying majestically from side to side and enjoying the undulating camel trail. What an experience!
Following on from that, we drove further into Timafaya
National Park to see the spectacular landscape of the fire mountains and to see
volcanic activity first hand. We were treated to several demonstrations of the
intense heat and power emanating from the volcano with powerful jets of steam
being blasted from a hot volcanic hole that a man had poured water into. This ignited
a bundle of straw simply from coming into contact with the hot gravel in a pit.
We stopped at Jameos del Agua, a series of lava caves with a subterranean salt lake, gardens and emerald-green pool. The salt lake is famous for its albino white crabs that looked like tiny sparkling stars in the dark water. The lush gardens were spectacular, and the greenery was reflected in the water below provided a beautiful cameo. It was a breathtaking display.
