Butlins, Fun & Dancing (Skegness)
We headed down to the fair for a morning of thrills. Our favourite rides were flying high in the sky on the Swing Chairs. Whizzing around on the Waltzer and crashing and bumping into each other on the Dodgems.
The old fashioned fairground stalls were too tempting and feeling lucky we had a go at Hook a Duck and the Target Game. We were all winners and got some great prizes!
On the agenda today was a morning at The Village Church Farm, on the outskirts of Skegness. This open-air museum displays local and agricultural history. We explored the many traditional indigenous buildings, including a thatched mud and stud cottage, and original 18th-century farmhouse. Each room displayed antique items and we reminisced about the olden days as we looked at an old washroom with a Dolly tub, washboard and soap flakes. Lloyd remembered having a weekly wash in an old tin bath by the fire. In one of the rooms was military memorabilia and we posed for photos wearing helmets and an old WWI Lee Enfield rifle and bayonet; Gary F laughed as someone said, “Don’t tell him your name Pyke”. We also learned that during WWII the Butlins complex was commandeered by the government to train naval ratings.
A wonderful morning was spent at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park. This is home to over 1000 parrots and parakeets of all different colours and sizes. We learnt amazing facts about their natural habitat and to our surprise some even spoke to us! As we entered an enclosure some of the parakeets perched on our arms and shoulders. It was an amazing experience being so close to these beautiful birds.
Next, we came face to face with Nigel the Puma and were thankful of the glass separating us. Then we saw two Lions laying out enjoying the sun. As we moved on Jamie couldn’t resist hiding in a bush and jumping out making an almighty roar, we did see the funny side though! We continued to explore the grounds and saw Cecil the Tapir; these are herbivores similar to a pig albeit with a large, elongated nose.
An ice cream treat was must! We were on holiday after all!
