Country Walks in the Peak District
Our adventure started in the picturesque village of Edale and at the the
famous Nag's Head Inn, which is the start of the Pennine Way. We followed the
footpath through the fields, full of grazing sheep until we reached a log
bridge which allowed us to continue through the rich green meadows and covered
woodland to a footbridge, that we learnt had been made by hand by a local
woodcarver.
The Heights of Abraham, which is located on the
edge of the Peak District in the quaint village of Matlock. Set in 60 acres of
landscaped grounds with cable cars taking you right to the top, multi-media
exhibitions, woodland walks and trails and two caverns with guided tours, we
certainly had a lot to explore. An excited group enjoyed the thrilling cable
car journey to the summit admiring the spectacular views across the Derwent
Valley.
We visited The Great Masson Cavern for a guided tour and a fascinating journey of the Caverns 300 million year history, followed by an opportunity to take some photos at the Tinkers Mine Shaft Viewing Point.
Some of the group spent the early part of the
evening playing a few games of pool whilst some played adventure golf and the
rest enjoying a swim and a quick workout in the gym. What a fit group we
had!
A planned 5 mile walk today through more breath taking scenery. As we were walking alongside the river we
spotted fish leaping out of the water. Some of the local fishermen suggested
these were trout. We crossed the river by the famous stepping stones,
luckily no one fell in and we then continued walk to a limestone feature known
as Lovers Leap. A great achievement.
On our walks we came across so much wildlife roaming free.
We couldn't get enough of the beautiful
rolling hills of the Derbyshire Dales.
We visited The Fossil Factory which provided us
with lots of interesting and fun facts about rocks, fossils and the formation
of the Peak District.
After all that walking we definitely deserved a tasty ice cream.
