The Island of Madeira with Derek, Wendy & Darren

  The Island of Madeira

Our hotel was beautiful, we all loved spending time relaxing on sun beds by the large outdoor pool.

We headed out from the hotel by foot to explore the surrounding area. Many of the bars and cafes were full of the friendly local people relaxing with their families. Along the way we enjoyed stopping for ice creams and souvenir shopping.

We saw some  beautiful views of the island.

Another day we ventured to Funchal where we visited the old town before we went to see the beautiful, peaceful Municipal Gardens.

We then walked on to the Parque de Santa Catarina, another beautiful garden where we climbed up high to get fantastic views across the harbour and the whole of the city.

In the evening we were entertained by some brilliant dancers who performed many styles of dancing from Street dance to traditional Portuguese. Then it was our turn as we took to the dance floor for the rest of the evening.

That day we explored the western side of the Island and drove to Camara de Lobos. Here there was a glass platform over the highest cliff in Europe called the Cabo Girao. From there we had fantastic views from this high cliff along the coastline and across the Atlantic and were able to look straight down from the glass platform all the way to the sea and beach far below.

Back in Funchal we visited the huge, covered market. What a great atmosphere wandering around the colourful stalls full of so many different flowers fruits and vegetables many of which we had never seen before. We had a fun time sampling many of them and chatting to the friendly stall holders.
