Attractions of Blackpool
Here we are at the famous Blackpool Tower. We started with a 4D experience in the cinema which included being sprayed with water, foam and bubbles! Such fun!
Then we travelled in the lift to the initial viewing platform over 380 feet high and some of the group were brave enough to stand on the glass floor with a view of the sandy beach far, far below. Others in the group opted to visit the highest viewing platform some 412 feet high with a stupendous 360-degree view of the town, pier and beach. You could see for miles!
One of our favourite places to visit is Madame Tussauds, the famous waxworks museum where we could see some of our most loved celebrities from stage and screen. We enjoyed seeing the presenters and costumes from the Strictly Come Dancing show and took our turn as the judges holding up our scores on wooden paddles. Of course, we gave everyone a ten! We had our photo taken with Ant and Dec on the set of I’m a Celebrity and luckily the creepy crawlies were all plastic. Phew!
We got up close and personal to some sporting stars and some of our favourite soap legends.
A picture with the Queen was a must!
It was time for a ballroom dancing lessons at the infamous Tower Ballroom. We were surrounded by such sumptuous and ornate decor. We all felt as if we had been on the tv show Strictly! Some of us were so inspired that they vowed to take dance lessons when they return home! (some even carried on practising when they got back to our village cottages)! This was followed by a trip to the Big Top at the Tower Circus Show. We saw such a variety of amazing acts including jugglers, trapeze acts, dancers, acrobats, trapeze artists, clowns, a contortionist, jugglers, gymnasts, human ‘hamsters’ running inside a rotating wheel, a live band, astonishing high wire balancing and somersaulting acts and tightrope walkers. The entertainment was simply stupendous and we were all open-mouthed with astonishment at their daredevil routines.
A fantastic morning was spent at our onsite zoo- Wild Discovery where we saw some fascinating animals including owls, vultures, sheep, Indian cows, anteaters, Arctic foxes, giant tortoises, antelope, mongooses and many more. All of the staff were so friendly and took the time to talk to us and tell us about the animals whilst patiently answering a host of questions we all asked. Strangely, we were all fascinated to find that the creature called a Binturong smelled like popcorn!
A trip to the Sealife Centre in Blackpool was on the agenda today and this was hugely enjoyed by all. We saw hundreds of different sea creatures up close and in the rockpool area we even got to gently tough them. We all enjoyed an interesting talk about sharks; especially the fact that they never stop moving! Feeling peckish, we enjoyed a traditional fish and chip lunch in a seafront restaurant, taking in the sea views.
The sun was shinning for our trip to Bowness on Lake Windermere where we embarked onto a traditional wooden boat, circa 1880 to sail to around the lake. The weather was glorious, the water calm and we saw the ravishing scenery at its very best. We disembarked at Lakeside Station and caught a vintage steam train to Haverthwaite where we ate a leisurely lunch inside the vintage station building itself. After a trip to the station gift shop for souvenirs, we caught the steam train back to Lakeside where we picked up the boat again for the reverse journey to Bowness. It was such a beautiful evening as we sailed back along the smooth and calm lake.
We hit the bowling alley for a friendly few games. There were high scores and some amazing strikes. Everyone showed great sportsmanship. The last of our holiday pennies were spent on the slot machines and arcades. We were all lucky winners.
