Lapland with Derek & Faye

We had a magical and wonderful experience in Lapland! Once off of the aeroplane we were amongst the snow and that set the scene for the rest of the holiday. It was a very mild minus 6 degrees and only went as low as minus 11 all holiday.

On our first day we settled in at our hotel and went out for a night of 10-pin bowling. The next morning we ventured into town and obtained our thermal suits and boots so that we kept nice and warm. From there we went to the foot of the ski slopes and tried out tobogganing. This was great fun and we spent a good time sliding down and then running back up the hill. We also visited a small Christmas market. After lunch we set off to see Santa Claus and his elves at his workshop. We immediately met up with one of his helpers and a magnificent reindeer. Next we were off to stroke some of his ponies before having a great experience on a motorised sledge/train ride through the pine forest. We then went into Santa’s work shop and helped make some gingerbread men and other shapes. Once cooked, they were eaten as they looked so delicious! It was time to see Santa himself!!! Everyone was very excited and we all had a few minutes with him in his comfortable room. He was just as imagined, a very jolly fellow with a magnificent beard and red robes.

The following day we were off to the reindeer farm and the dog ranch. We all fell in love with the Husky puppies and were lucky enough to hold some of them. The huskies were all there, waiting to be harnessed up to the sledges and to take us for a fast trek across the frozen lake and into the forest. We went at great speed (well, it felt that way) and at times it felt like being on a fairground ride. Once that was over and after a hot drink and cookies we went on our reindeer sleigh ride. Back at the hotel, we dressed for a Christmas dinner and a party evening. This time, after dinner, Father Christmas came to visit us and he was so very nice to us. We were able, once again, to ask him questions and he did the same back. Before leaving him he gave us all a small present to take home! Good ol’ Santa. After the party we once again headed for the bowling alley before the night was out.
