The Garden Island of Madeira with David, Ase, Nick and Dan

The Garden Island of Madeira

The blue skies and the incredible views made our day out so memorable. We visited one of the most famous waterfalls on the island, Brides Vail.  We were entertained by street musicians as we explored the cobbled streets.

We had an impressive tour of a local sweet and cake manufacturer. The best bit was getting to taste these delicious treats!

We loved coming back to the hotel pool in the afternoon to relax on the sunbed, enjoying the winter sun. A dip in the pool was needed to cool off! We were super impressed by everyone's swimming.

We walked along the promenade with amazing views out to sea, the harbour full of boats and the old Castle de Funchal which was at the end of the old town.

In the cable car we were taken to the highest point of the city. To the village of Monte, with stunning views over Funchal. The Monte church has architectural features form the 18th and 19th centuries. We also found the wicker toboggans ‘carros de cestos’, a unique form of transport which are driven by two men called Carreiros.

The football fans amongst us couldn't wait to visit the  legendary Ronaldo Museum and learn about where he grew up on the island and how he became so passionate about football.  We were thrilled to have our picture taken with his iconic statue.

Without fail, every night we were up on the dance floor showing off our cool disco moves.  The evening entertainment was always fantastic. We particularly enjoyed the Flamenco show with it's passionate dance moves and beautiful costumes.

Our tour guide, Pedro was so knowledgeable and showed us some historic sites. Our first stop was at  Santo Antonio look out point with 360 degree views out over Saint Martin‘s church  We finished our day at the  Santa Cruz Canico where the first 'Christ the King' statue was erected in 1927, 4 years before the one in Rio, Brazil. What a breathtaking sight.

We were thrilled to see a vast variety of fish, from Tuna to Salmon, Sardines to Sole. It was an incredible experience to see the fish mongers gutting the fish right in front of our eyes. The vegetable market was also an incredible sight. The bright colours of the fresh produce amazed us and we even got to taste some of the many unusual vegetables and exotic fruits, including the famous Madeira Custard Apple.

We went wine tasting at the famous Henriques and Henriques winery where we sampled some of the finest Madeiran wine. Some of us even bought a bottle to take home.

Just look at those clear blue skies and turquoise water. We sat and took in the beautiful views of the coastline whilst treating ourselves to a delicious ice cream!
