Austria Sound of Music Tour with Derek, Pat & Mags

Driving through Germany to Austria gave us our first taste of the beautiful scenery that we were going to enjoy for the rest of our holiday. Arriving just in time for dinner, we set out to one of our favourite, friendly restaurants and had our first Austrian meal. The evening was fun and we all ate well and fell into bed for a good night’s sleep.

The following morning we had a relaxed breakfast and decided it would be a good idea to take a wander around our village. We visited the church, peered at gnomes in gardens and were blown away with the beauty of not only the fabulous flower boxes everywhere, but all around were the beautiful mountains. After lunch we drove to Zell Am See for a walk by the lake and sat and had a drink, whilst breathing in the magnificence of our surroundings. We went back to our family run hotel and had a pre dinner drink. Making ourselves presentable, we then went for dinner and had another superb meal. The restaurant staff really looked after us and we felt very special.

The next day we had breakfast and set off for our day trip to Krimmler waterfall. We had to walk through forestry to the base of the waterfall, all the time we had magnificent scenery to awe at and of course we also could hear the falling water as we got near. We got a little wet by the spray due to the force of the gushing water. We lunched overlooking the waterfall. It was perfect. A few gifts were bought to remind us of our holiday. It was then off for a driven through the mountains and we saw superb scenery wherever we looked. Onto Bad Gastein we took a walk around some of the spa town and ended up in an ice cream parlour sampling many different exotic concoctions.

It was the day we had all been waiting for, the Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg. It started off quite wet as we drove into Salzburg, but fortunately it slowed to a few showers as we walked firstly through the Mirrabel gardens. It was full of blooms, fountains and statues. We then went into the streets of the town and admired the shops within their courtyards and we looked inside a church. The market was full of cut flowers and local produce. We lunched and then had our tour. It was singing all the way, stopping off along the way to visit all of the places that we remember from the film and enjoying the commentary from our professional tour guide.

Our tour for the following day started with another trip to Zell where we stopped off for lunch after a walk beside the lake. We then drove to Mittersill to catch the steam train back to Zell. It was a fantastic ride through the valleys with gorgeous scenery. Once in Zell, we wandered the streets, bought more gifts and had a drink before returning to Mittersill and driving home. Dinner was again in our village (we were spoilt by choice) and we had a good meal and lots of laughs.

After breakfast we once again set off to Zell for our lake cruise stopping along the way, zig zagging from one shore to the next. The weather was the most beautiful of the holiday and everything looked absolutely magnificent. We caught a gondola ride up to the very top of the mountains and had great views across the mountain ranges that surrounded us. It was fantastic. There were whooping and laughing as when the gondolas stopped they rocked steadily for a while. It was such good fun! Back at our hotel, we had drinks in the wonderful gardens and then got ready for an early dinner at our most favourite restaurant. After dinner we went to the village community centre where we listened to traditional Austrian music with dancing and much thigh slapping. It was very entertaining.
