Battlefields & War Museum in France with Derek & Netty

Battlefields & War Museum in France

During our week in France we visited many cemetery to commemorate all the soldiers that had lost their life during the 1st and 2nd World Wars. We all found the experience very moving as we wandered amongst the thousands of headstones.

We also visited a few war museums. It was great to see all sorts of war memorabilia and to learn more about the history. We all enjoyed spending hours looking around at costume, armoury and watching interesting film.

We went to Le Touquet famous street market and enjoyed wandering the buzzing streets buying gifts and souvenirs. We also went to the beach that stretched as far as the eye could see, with pure white sands.

In Boulogne we went to the sea life centre for lunch and then had a good look around. This sea life centre is the biggest in Europe, it houses so many species of fish and sharks.

At the chocolate factory we watched the people who worked there make chocolates and then sampled some. The chocolates where delicious and some of us bought some to take home.

In Ypres, we were all amazed by the size of the huge beautiful white arches of the Menin Gate a tribute to all the soldiers who died in the 1914-1918 war on the walls was the names of all the men who died in the Great War. We had a walk around the town with its huge museum and cathedral. We then went into St George’s memorial church in Ypres such a beautiful church.

We saw the parade by the Scots guards followed by the last post played by a bugler precisely at 8pm. There must have been about 100 people watching and a silence fell over the whole crowd to pay respect to the fallen heroes of the Great War.

At La Coupole we saw a beautiful planetarium, dedicated to WW2 we learnt so much about the war, D day landings and Europe’s involvement in the war. We went into the huge bunker used to make and launch the V1 and V2 silent rockets, which devastated London.
